Harry wants to keep hearing his parents even though it's their last moments that he hears - a terrible instance of looking for more pain (common for trauma survivors). Harry relives memories he didn't even know he had when the dementors get close, and their effect lingers long after they've gone.

Hagrid is permanently scared from his time there and won't free Buckbeak whom he loves because he's terrified of ending up back in Azkaban. The dementors were a symbol of depression and everyone was horrified of the prison but I don't think most people appreciate how truly horrifying Azkaban is (I didn't either until writing about it recently). Chamber of Secrets absolutely but also Azkaban, which is the scariest to me. I think there were a lot of instances where the books underplayed darker aspects of the plot. I'm curious if anyone agrees with me! What plot is scariest to you? Do you enjoy the books more before or after the tone change? I've personally always preferred the later books but I am interested in what others think. Not a complaint, just something I think is interesting to ponder. Also think that at least one of the petrified would die if it was written after the tone change. He would probably have some kind of spiral and long internal monlogue. Even Harry's reaction to Hermione being petrified, though he is very sad and worried, of course, is very different to how I think he would react after JKR changed her writing style.
I feel like if this plot happened after Voldemort was reborn, JKR's writing style changed, and Harry became a lot more contemplative, it would read as a slight horror novel. The text itself, however, is really not that haunting. Adding in the elements of grooming and that is a truly sickening concept. An unknown monster in a secret chamber no one knows the location of is being released by the heir of a famous bigot to kill "unpure" children. I'm currently on a Harry Potter re-reading and I noticed how dark and scary the plot of Chamber of Secrets is.
